The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, welcomed a $5.65 million contribution from the Korea International Cooperation Agency on Thursday (KOICA).
Over a four-year period, this new funding will help strengthen UNHCR’s response to the health, access to potable water, and education needs of refugees and host communities in Pakistan.
Ms Noriko Yoshida, UNHCR Representative in Pakistan, and Mr Je Ho Yeon, Director of KOICA for Pakistan, signed the agreement for the multi-year funds for the Pakistan programme in Islamabad, joined by Mr June Seo Park, Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Pakistan, and Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, Mr Farid Ullah Jan.

This collaboration will assist UNHCR in providing better health services to refugees and Pakistani communities by supplying health equipment to government health facilities and providing support to Mother and Child Health Centres. This will also allow UNHCR to provide safe drinking water to refugees as well as host communities.
The programme also includes an important educational component, which is critical for the future of young refugees and Pakistani children. By improving infrastructure, UNHCR hopes to increase access to schools for both boys and girls in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad, as well as ensure safe learning environments for the next generation.
As part of an international effort to increase contributions to communities that have generously shared their resources with refugees for decades, health and education programmes, as well as water and sanitation programmes, assist host community members.
