UN Urges Israel to Cease Support for Settler Attacks in West Bank Amid Escalating Violence
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Amid escalating tensions in the occupied West Bank, the United Nations has called on Israel to halt its support for attacks by settlers, following a recent surge in violence. The UN’s plea comes in the wake of deadly incidents involving Israeli settlers and Palestinian victims, heightening concerns over the deteriorating situation in the region.

The recent violence in the West Bank has prompted the UN to issue a strong statement urging Israel to take immediate action to restore public order and safety. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized Israel’s obligation as the occupying power to protect Palestinians from settler attacks and to cease the unlawful use of force against them by Israeli Security Forces.

According to reports, the situation has reached a critical juncture, with a significant rise in settler attacks on Palestinian communities. The Palestinian Health Ministry has documented a disturbing trend, reporting that at least 466 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since October 7. The alarming statistics include the deaths of 112 children, highlighting the devastating impact of the violence on innocent civilians.

The surge in settler attacks has intensified concerns among human rights organizations, with Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) issuing a joint call for action. These organizations have urged the international community, as well as private actors and businesses, to intervene and put an end to the violence against Palestinians.

Meanwhile, in response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank, the UN announced plans to launch a $2.8 billion appeal for donations. The funds will be directed towards providing vital assistance to Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict. However, challenges remain in delivering humanitarian aid effectively due to limited access in certain areas.

As tensions continue to escalate in the West Bank, the UN’s call for Israel to cease its support for settler attacks underscores the urgent need for decisive action to prevent further bloodshed. With innocent lives at stake and the humanitarian situation worsening, swift intervention is imperative to address the root causes of the conflict and pave the way for peace and stability in the region.
