UN Chief Urges ‘Immediate Ceasefire’ in Gaza as Death Toll Surpasses 35,000 Palestinians
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated the urgent need for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip. As Israeli forces continue their offensive, the death toll in the besieged territory has surpassed 35,000 Palestinians since the attacks commenced in October, according to officials.

Guterres addressed international donors gathered in Kuwait, calling for not only a ceasefire but also the “unconditional release of all captives held by Hamas” and a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. He emphasized that while a ceasefire is crucial, it will only mark the beginning of a long road to recovery from the devastation and trauma inflicted by the ongoing conflict.

Despite these calls for peace, Israeli forces have intensified their attacks on multiple points in Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Recent airstrikes and ground incursions have displaced hundreds of thousands of refugees, adding to the already dire situation faced by Palestinians in the besieged enclave.

The situation on the ground remains dire, with reports of civilian casualties and widespread destruction. The Jabalia refugee camp, home to over 100,000 Palestinians, has come under heavy bombardment, further exacerbating the suffering of its residents. Eyewitnesses have reported Israeli tanks surrounding evacuation centers and residential buildings, raising concerns about the safety of civilians trapped in the conflict zone.

Amid the escalating violence, humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the acute shortage of essential supplies, including food, medical aid, and fuel, in Gaza. Civil defense officials have highlighted the critical lack of medical services and humanitarian assistance, leaving displaced people without access to lifesaving care and support.

The international community has a moral obligation to intervene and address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Urgent action is needed to secure a ceasefire, ensure the safe evacuation of civilians, and provide much-needed humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population. As the death toll continues to rise and the humanitarian situation deteriorates, swift and decisive action is imperative to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the immense suffering endured by the people of Gaza.
