Ukrainian Air Base Faces Persistent Attacks Amid Incoming F-16 Deployments
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Explosions echoed through the pre-dawn sky a s Ukrainian air defenses thwarted a Russian assault on Starokostiantyniv, a crucial air base in western Ukraine that has become a frequent target of Moscow’s military strikes. The attack on June 27, 2023, served as a stark reminder of the challenges Kyiv faces in rebuilding its depleted air force and preparing for the arrival of the first US-designed F-16 fighter jets. These jets, expected to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities upon arrival later this month, are seen as essential in countering Russia’s ongoing offensive, which has included devastating glide bomb attacks along the front lines.

Starokostiantyniv, nestled in Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi region, has been a focal point since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, enduring relentless attacks that include drone strikes and hypersonic missile bombardments. Despite the persistent threat, the city of approximately 30,000 people, affectionately nicknamed Starkon, has adapted to living under constant danger.

Vasyl Muliar, a local official and cultural expert, wryly remarked, “In short, it’s ‘fun’ to live here,” reflecting on the resilience of the community following yet another assault. The Ukrainian air force, though facing challenges from the attacks, remains resolute that the delivery and operational deployment of the F-16s will proceed as planned.

However, the exact location where the F-16s will be based remains undisclosed by Ukrainian officials, prompting Moscow to openly declare its targeting strategy against potential deployment sites following the assault on Starokostiantyniv.

Military analysts speculate that Russian attacks may focus on critical airfield infrastructure, such as runways and storage facilities, to hinder the F-16s’ operational readiness upon arrival. Justin Bronk, from the Royal United Services Institute, emphasized the vulnerability of ground-based air defense systems against potential saturation attacks from Russia, underscoring the strategic challenges ahead.

Following the recent assault, Serhiy Tyurin, the governor of the region, reported that Ukrainian air defenses successfully neutralized nine targets over Starokostiantyniv. Residents, cautioned by the Ukrainian air force of impending drone threats just before the attack, have become accustomed to the constant roar of Ukrainian warplanes overhead.

Iryna Sapchuk, editor-in-chief of the local newspaper Our City, recounted the personal impact of living in a targeted city, noting that her parents’ home had been hit in a previous raid, leaving debris from a missile lodged in a cherry tree by their window. Despite the hardships, she expressed admiration for the resilience displayed by the community in the face of adversity.

Throughout Ukraine, similar scenes of resilience unfold amid the inconveniences caused by frequent power outages resulting from Russian attacks on the energy grid. Construction work continues unabated, while families and teenagers seek solace at the local beach, amidst the backdrop of fighter jets streaking across the sky.

Reflecting on the historical significance of Starokostiantyniv as a bastion of defense dating back to the 16th century and later as a pivotal center for Ukrainian independence fighters after World War I, Muliar underscored the city’s enduring spirit of resistance.

As Ukraine prepares to welcome the F-16s in the coming weeks, the city remains on alert, its residents embracing the sound of Ukrainian jets as a reassuring sign of their valiant efforts in the ongoing conflict.
