Ukraine to Construct First Underground School in Kharkiv to Protect Students from Russian Aerial Attacks
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a move aimed at safeguarding the future of its youth in the midst of relentless Russian aerial attacks, Ukraine has unveiled plans to construct its inaugural fully underground school. The initiative, spearheaded by the city’s Mayor Ihor Terekhov, will see the city of Kharkiv become the pioneering location for this resilient educational institution. As the conflict with Russia continues to escalate, with devastating consequences for communities near the Russian border, this innovative project aims to protect students ‘even during missile threats,’ Mayor Terekhov affirmed.

Innovative Protective Measures Amid Ongoing Aerial Attacks

Kharkiv, a city located merely 35 kilometers from the Russian border, has been enduring the relentless onslaught of Russian air raids, often striking with little warning, leaving residents scrambling for safety. To counter this perilous situation, Mayor Terekhov announced the ambitious plan to construct Ukraine’s first underground school. This state-of-the-art facility will meet the most stringent regulatory standards for protective structures, providing a haven for students in times of crisis.

The decision to embark on this groundbreaking project underscores Ukraine’s commitment to the safety and education of its youngest citizens. The Mayor’s assertion that this underground shelter will enable thousands of children in Kharkiv to continue their education, ‘even during missile threats,’ reflects the city’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its future generations.

Ensuring Safe In-Person Education for Kharkiv’s Youth

While the exact timeline for the construction of the underground school remains undisclosed, Mayor Terekhov emphasized that funding for education in Kharkiv would not be curtailed in the upcoming 2023-24 period, despite budget constraints. The move towards an underground school comes as Ukrainian schools in conflict-ridden areas have been compelled to transition to online learning, disrupting the traditional education system. In anticipation of these challenges, Kharkiv had already taken proactive measures, setting up approximately 60 separate classrooms within its metro stations before the commencement of the new school year on September 1. This initiative allowed over 1,000 children to pursue their studies safely.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Education has reported staggering figures, with 363 educational institutions destroyed and nearly 3,800 damaged across the country since the full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022. These alarming statistics highlight the urgency of protective measures such as the underground school in Kharkiv, as the conflict’s devastating impact on education infrastructure becomes increasingly evident.

Ongoing Struggles and Devastation in Kharkiv Due to Russian Attacks

The situation in Kharkiv remains dire, with the governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Synyehubov, reporting fresh casualties and destruction caused by Russian shelling and rocket attacks. In the 24 hours leading up to Monday, one civilian lost their life, and several houses sustained damage due to the unrelenting onslaught. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing suffering and devastation endured by the residents of Kharkiv and other front-line areas.

As Ukraine continues to grapple with the devastating consequences of the ongoing conflict, the construction of the first underground school in Kharkiv offers a ray of hope for the city’s youth. It represents a steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety and education of the next generation in the face of adversity, as Kharkiv strives to protect its students ‘even during missile threats.’
