Ukraine Strikes Prized Russian Su-57 Fighter at Airbase
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant blow to Russia’s military might, the Ukrainian armed forces have claimed to have struck a Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet, one of the most advanced aircraft in Moscow’s arsenal, at a Russian airbase. This attack marks a notable escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two countries, with Ukraine demonstrating its ability to target high-value Russian assets deep within its territory.

According to the Ukrainian military’s GUR defense intelligence agency, the Su-57 was hit at the Akhtubinsk airfield, which is located some 589 kilometers (366 miles) from the front lines in Ukraine. The agency released satellite images showing the aftermath of the attack, with visible soot marks and small craters around the parked aircraft.

The Su-57, a fifth-generation fighter jet, is considered a prized possession in the Russian military’s inventory. It is designed to rival the United States’ F-22 Raptor and is capable of carrying stealth missiles across vast distances. The GUR stated that the attacked plane was one of the “countable few” Su-57s in Moscow’s possession, highlighting the significance of this strike.

A popular pro-war Russian military blogger, known as Fighterbomber, confirmed the report, stating that the Su-57 had been hit by a drone strike and was currently undergoing assessment to determine if it could be repaired. If the plane is deemed beyond repair, it would mark the first combat loss of the advanced fighter jet.

The Ukrainian attack on the Su-57 comes as the country has been focusing on developing long-range drones to strike targets deep inside Russia. This approach is a response to the vast missile arsenal available to Moscow, which Ukraine lacks. The successful targeting of the prized Russian aircraft showcases the growing capabilities of the Ukrainian military and its ability to adapt to the evolving dynamics of the conflict.

The absence of an official Kremlin response to the claimed attack is noteworthy, as Russia’s military bloggers are often seen as sources of information on military losses in the absence of official statements. This silence from the Russian leadership further underscores the potential significance of this incident and the potential blow to the country’s military prestige.

Despite being touted as a formidable fighter jet, the Su-57 has faced its own challenges, including development delays and a crash in 2019. The start of serial production of the aircraft was only announced in 2022, further highlighting the importance of this latest strike for the Ukrainian forces.

The Ukrainian strike on the Su-57 represents a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict, as Kyiv demonstrates its ability to target and potentially neutralize some of Russia’s most advanced military hardware. This development may have far-reaching implications, both in terms of the military balance between the two countries and the broader geopolitical landscape.

As the war in Ukraine continues to evolve, this attack on the prized Russian fighter jet serves as a stark reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the Ukrainian armed forces, as they continue to push the boundaries of what was once thought possible in their fight for sovereignty and independence.
