A groundbreaking Position Paper on the climate problem and the global education crisis was released by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom. In the wake of increasingly frequent catastrophic weather disasters and calamities, the document advocates for sustained funding to “strengthen Education Cannot Wait’s role in guaranteeing continuity of education for all.” Every year, 40 million children’s educations are impacted by the global climate issue. According to Education Cannot Wait, the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, 222 million vulnerable girls and boys worldwide are affected by violence, climate-induced disasters, forced displacement, and protracted crises and require immediate support for their education. however, they are investing at the end of the famine, the terrible cycles of displacement, and violent conflict by funding girls’ education in countries like Pakistan, the Horn of Africa, and other nations on the front lines of the climate crisis. With 159 million dollars in contributions thus far, the UK is Education Cannot Wait’s the second-largest donor.
The Send My Friend To School Campaign is calling on the UK Government to pledge £170 million in additional funding for the charity. Girls’ secondary education has been identified as the most important socioeconomic determinant in reducing vulnerability to climate change.
