Every year on December 8th, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) celebrates Charter Day. On this date in 1985, the SAARC Charter was approved in Dhaka at the organization’s inaugural meeting. The regional organisation celebrates its 38th anniversary this year. At the first SAARC Summit held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the heads of state or government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka signed the charter.
The main objective of SAARC is to work collaboratively to improve the welfare of people in the area and their standard of living through social advancement and economic development. Members of SAARC seek to advance regional stability, peace, and development. Since 1985, SAARC has hosted 18 summits. These specialised organisations support SAARC countries’ regional cooperation in a variety of areas.
