Russia-Ukraine War: Key Events on Day 659
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine enters its 659th day, significant developments continue to unfold.

Fighting:

Missile Attack on Kyiv: Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv, causing injuries to at least 53 people, including six children. The city’s air defenses intercepted Iskander-M and S-400 missiles, but falling debris damaged buildings and vehicles. Eighteen injured individuals were hospitalized.

Cyberattack on Kyivstar: The hacker group Solntsepyok claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile phone network. The attack left millions without phone access or air raid alerts. Kyiv believes the group is linked to Russian military intelligence. Kyivstar began restoring voice services to some users.

Politics and Diplomacy:

EU Membership Talks: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban not to block Ukraine’s EU membership. EU leaders are set to decide on opening formal membership talks. Orban, a close ally of Russian President Putin, opposes Ukraine’s swift EU entry, citing Hungary’s interests.

Support from Nordic Countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland pledged ongoing support to Ukraine. They emphasized standing with Ukraine against Russia’s aggression and expressed readiness for extensive military, economic, and humanitarian assistance.

EU Leaders’ Support: EU leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Olaf Scholz, and Emmanuel Macron, reiterated their support for Ukraine. Scholz suggested potential changes to EU enlargement decisions, proposing a shift from unanimity to a majority vote. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk vowed to persuade Orban to reconsider his stance.

Espionage Allegations: A German court heard allegations that Russia paid former BND (Germany’s foreign intelligence agency) employee Carsten Linke over €450,000 for information on weaponry supplied by the West to Ukraine. Linke and accomplice Arthur Eller face charges of high treason.

Weapons:

Military Support: German Chancellor Scholz emphasized that Western military support aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense, preventing future Russian aggression. The goal is to make Russia think twice before launching further attacks.
As the conflict evolves, the international community closely watches the developments and assesses its response to the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe.
