Russia-Ukraine War: A Detailed Look at Day 651
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine unfolds into its 651st day, significant developments mark the ongoing hostilities:

Fighting Escalation:

In a disturbing turn of events, Russia targeted vital civilian infrastructure, including an aid center and a medical facility, in Ukraine’s southern and eastern regions. The missile strikes resulted in the tragic loss of three lives and left at least 11 individuals injured.

Responding to the aggression, Ukraine’s military successfully intercepted 10 out of 17 attack drones launched by Russia overnight. The drones struck various locations, causing minimal damage. Russia’s defense ministry claimed that its air defense systems neutralized a total of 41 Ukraine-launched drones.

Drones reportedly targeted crucial military installations in Crimea, raising tensions in the already volatile region. The attacks on radar systems and an anti-aircraft missile control system were attributed to a special operation by Ukraine’s SBU military intelligence services.

Political Maneuvers:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faced a setback as he had to cancel plans for a crucial video-link appeal to US lawmakers. Some Republicans had sought to link additional aid to Ukraine with US immigration policy, creating obstacles in securing vital support.

In a diplomatic move, six Ukrainian children are set to return to their families from Russia, thanks to a deal brokered by Qatar. Simultaneously, the US imposed sanctions on Dzmitry Shautsou, head of the Belarus Red Cross, accusing him of involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.

Efforts to secure the release of businessman Paul Whelan and journalist Evan Gershkovich faced a setback as Russia rejected a “substantial” proposal. The US responded by imposing new sanctions, targeting a defense procurement network spanning multiple countries.

Scrutiny on Arms Procurement:

Amid the conflict, Ukraine announced an investigation into alleged corruption related to arms procurement. Authorities clarified that while several proceedings were underway, there was no evidence of misuse of Western weapons supplied to Ukraine for its defense.

Oleksandr Klymenko, the head of the anticorruption prosecutor’s office, disclosed ongoing investigations into arms procurement contracts ranging from 10 to 100 million euros. The details of these contracts remain undisclosed at this point.

As the Russia-Ukraine war unfolds on its 651st day, a complex tapestry of military engagements, diplomatic maneuvers, and internal investigations shapes the narrative, underscoring the multifaceted nature of this protracted conflict.
