Russia to Host Landmark BRICS Summit in Ongoing Bid to Reshape World Order
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The concept of world order is being challenged as Russia prepares to host what promises to be a transformative BRICS summit in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. This gathering represents a significant shift in global power dynamics, with Moscow positioning itself at the center of an expanding alliance that increasingly rivals Western economic and political dominance.

Global Powerhouse in the Making

The BRICS economic bloc, which began in 2009 with Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has evolved into a formidable force in global politics. With South Africa joining in 2010 and the recent expansion including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, BRICS+ now commands an impressive 37% of worldwide GDP – more than double the European Union’s share. The alliance’s economic might is matched by its demographic weight, representing over 41% of the global population.

World Order: Shifting Alliances and Strategic Moves

The summit has attracted significant international attention, with 24 state leaders confirming their attendance. Among the most notable participants is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the sole NATO leader present at the gathering. Turkey’s recent formal bid for BRICS membership underscores the alliance’s growing appeal, even among traditional Western allies. This development comes alongside applications from several post-Soviet states, including Azerbaijan and Belarus, though Kazakhstan has notably chosen to maintain its distance while still participating in the summit.

Transforming Kazan and Local Impact

The preparations for this historic summit have transformed Kazan’s urban landscape and daily life. A massive investment of 8 billion rubles ($80 million) has been poured into city renovation projects, while local hotel owners were required to invest an additional 1 billion rubles ($10 million) in presidential suite construction. The impact on local residents has been substantial, with authorities implementing widespread restrictions: schools and universities have shifted to remote learning, dormitories have been evacuated, state employees have been placed on mandatory leave, and public venues have been closed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s presence adds international legitimacy to the gathering, while the participation of various global leaders highlights the summit’s significance in reshaping international relations. The meeting agenda focuses on pressing global issues, including the Ukraine crisis, and explores alternatives to Western-dominated financial systems.

The symbolism of hosting this summit in Kazan, a city representing Russia’s multicultural heritage, is particularly significant. As the capital of Tatarstan, home to one of the world’s largest Turkic Muslim populations, it serves as a bridge between different cultural and political spheres. This choice of location reinforces Russia’s message of creating a more diverse and multipolar world order.

Despite some notable absences, such as Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the summit represents a crucial moment in international relations. It demonstrates Russia’s resilience in maintaining and expanding its global influence, even as it faces continued criticism over its actions in Ukraine. The gathering also highlights the growing attraction of alternative international frameworks for nations seeking to balance their relationships between East and West.

For Russia, the summit represents more than just a diplomatic gathering – it’s a statement about its vision for a new world order. Through BRICS+, Moscow is attempting to demonstrate that Western attempts at isolation have failed and that it remains a pivotal player in shaping global affairs. The expansion of BRICS+ and the diversity of attending nations suggest that this vision is gaining traction among a significant portion of the international community.
