Russia Praises and Supports Belt and Road Initiative in High-Level Talks with China
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced his admiration and robust support for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), lauding Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “strategic foresight” in assessing the global landscape. During their recent meeting in St. Petersburg, President Putin commended the progress achieved in bilateral exchanges and cooperation between the two nations since President Xi’s visit to Russia earlier this year. This latest development underscores the growing synergy between Russia and China and their shared commitment to deepening their strategic partnership.

Bilateral Cooperation Flourishes

President Putin, in his discussion with senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi, emphasized the substantial progress in bilateral exchanges and cooperation since President Xi’s visit to Russia in March. The two leaders acknowledged the fruitful outcomes of their collaboration and expressed eagerness to further enhance the planning and depth of their pragmatic cooperation. Russia unequivocally declared its strong support for the Belt and Road Initiative, with President Putin denouncing any attempts to distort or discredit this ambitious project. Furthermore, Moscow signaled its readiness to bolster the alignment between the Eurasian Economic Union and the BRI, a move aimed at advancing regional integration.

Economic Ties Soar

China continues to hold the distinction of being Russia’s foremost trade partner for an impressive 13 consecutive years. Their trade relationship reached a remarkable milestone last year, with annual trade volume surging to an unprecedented $190.2 billion. In the first half of this year alone, the bilateral trade surpassed the $114 billion mark, a testament to the enduring strength of their economic ties. Experts suggest that the successful synergy between the BRI and the Eurasian Economic Union has played a pivotal role in this burgeoning economic partnership, creating a win-win scenario for both nations. Zhang Hong, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies, emphasized that their cooperation is built on the principles of not targeting any third party and eschewing confrontation or alliances.

Global Cooperation

Putin’s endorsement of the current international situation, echoing President Xi’s strategic insights, underscores the alignment of Russia and China in addressing global challenges. The Russian President pledged to maintain close coordination with China within multilateral frameworks such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, with a shared goal of resisting unilateralism, hegemony, and bloc-based confrontation. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to safeguarding international fairness and justice, marking a unified stance in the global arena.

Wang Yi, a key figure in Chinese foreign affairs, highlighted the significant roles played by China and Russia as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He underscored their collective responsibility in advancing global development and progress. Furthermore, he stressed the need for strengthened multilateral strategic cooperation to uphold the legitimate rights and interests of both nations and contribute to a more just and reasonable international order.

In a related context, President Putin reaffirmed Russia’s dedication to resolving the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and negotiation, emphasizing the importance of peaceful solutions to complex international issues.

As Russia and China continue to strengthen their diplomatic bonds and economic ties, the world watches closely, recognizing the potential of this powerful partnership to shape international relations and foster global stability. The affirmation of mutual support for the Belt and Road Initiative by President Putin further solidifies the strategic alliance between these two influential nations.
