The five African nations of Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Angola, and Benin will all be visited by China’s new foreign minister, Qin Gang. China has prioritised relations with developing countries, particularly those in Africa. In their economic relations, China and African countries clearly benefit from one another. Bilateral trade reached $254 billion in 2021, a 35% increase year on year. China’s perspectives on Africa’s debt and poverty challenges, as well as how China can assist Africa in making the transition to cleaner energy and robust development, will be highlighted.
The agenda for the trip by Qin Gang, China’s new foreign minister, to Ethiopia and the headquarters of the African Union includes peace in conflict-affected areas, respect for one another, and practical cooperation. Nonetheless, Qin’s trip to Africa will be closely monitored by the Biden administration, which sees China as attempting to expand its influence in the region. China has provided and will continue to provide food, vaccines, and other humanitarian aid to Ethiopia, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and African Union (AU) Chairman Faki Melekele, who met in Addis Ababa. Qin reaffirmed China’s commitment to its Horn of Africa Initiative for Peaceful Development. He also attended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention project completion ceremony.
