Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The conversation surrounded around the after-effects of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria as well as Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine.
During the conversation Erdogan emphasised on the need to achieve a just peace in order to prevent further human casualties and destruction. The President also showed the desire regarding Ankara’s readiness to provide all kinds of support in this matter.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin’s statement shows that both the presidents have discussed about the grain agreement.
Earlier, Erdogan said that he had a phone call with Zelensky, during which he declared Turkey’s readiness to contribute in peace and ceasefire and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Ankara has repeatedly expressed his desire to play the role of facilitator between the warring sides.
For example, on Jan. 14, Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said that Turkey is willing to push for local ceasefires and small localized de-escalations in Ukraine.
In a call with Zelensky on Jan. 20, Erdogan reportedly said that Turkey is ready to take on the role of a mediator for the establishment of lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
