President Biden Invites Israeli PM Netanyahu to the US After Delay Over Concerns
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant development, President Joe Biden has extended an official invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a visit to the United States later this year. The invitation comes after a prolonged delay, driven by President Biden’s reservations about a judicial overhaul pursued by Netanyahu’s right-wing government and Israel’s expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The invitation was conveyed during a phone call between the two leaders on Monday, just ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s scheduled visit to Washington, DC.

Delays and Concerns Addressed

President Biden had withheld extending the invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu for several months, largely due to concerns surrounding a judicial overhaul initiated by Netanyahu’s government and Israel’s actions regarding illegal settlements in the West Bank. The White House had been closely monitoring these developments, seeking assurance that Israel’s actions align with democratic principles and the broader international community’s expectations.

Israeli President to Address US Congress

Amidst the invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu, the US House of Representatives and Senate have invited Israeli President Isaac Herzog to address a joint meeting of Congress on Wednesday. While Herzog’s role as head of state is primarily ceremonial, there have been indications that some members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus might choose not to attend the event. This could potentially reflect ongoing tensions within the US government over Israel’s policies and actions.

Emphasis on Countering Iran and Two-State Solution

Various topics were discussed during the phone call between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu, including attempts to thwart Iran’s nuclear development. President Biden underlined the need of seeking a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, as well as strengthening West Bank security measures. Furthermore, both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening the US-Israel partnership in dealing with regional dangers posed by Iran and its affiliates.

The upcoming visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States marks a pivotal moment in US-Israel relations. President Biden’s extension of the invitation, despite previous delays, signifies a commitment to addressing shared concerns while bolstering cooperation on regional security matters. As both nations navigate complex geopolitical challenges, the visit holds the potential to foster dialogue and cooperation between the two allies, while also addressing ongoing issues surrounding Israel’s actions and policies.
