Pelosi Joins Call for Biden to Halt Weapons Transfer to Israel Amid Gaza Crisis
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a prominent ally of President Joe Biden, has added her voice to a growing chorus of congressional Democrats urging the administration to halt the transfer of weapons to Israel. Pelosi’s endorsement came through her signature on a letter signed by dozens of Democratic lawmakers, addressed to President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The letter, sent on Friday, underscores mounting concerns over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating conflict between Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. The conflict, sparked by Hamas’s October 7 attack, has faced international condemnation as Gaza reels from the reported death toll of over 33,000 people and widespread hunger.

Pelosi’s support for suspending weapons transfers to Israel reflects a shifting perspective within the Democratic Party, with an increasing number of lawmakers aligning themselves with calls for a reevaluation of U.S. military support to Israel in light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The key impetus behind Friday’s letter was the recent Israeli airstrike that claimed the lives of seven aid workers affiliated with the humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen. In response to this incident and the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, the lawmakers deemed it unjustifiable to continue approving weapons transfers to Israel.

The letter, co-signed by Pelosi and 36 other Democratic representatives, including Barbara Lee, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also called for an independent investigation by the Biden administration into the airstrike that killed the aid workers.

In response to mounting pressure, the Israeli military announced on Friday that it had dismissed two officers and reprimanded senior commanders following an inquiry into the deaths of the aid workers. President Biden, in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, emphasized the need for Israel to take greater measures to protect civilians, warning of potential policy changes if such actions were not undertaken.

The October 7 attack by Hamas, which killed 1,200 people according to Israeli reports, triggered a retaliatory military assault by Israel on the Hamas-governed Gaza Strip. The ensuing conflict has resulted in the displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants and has prompted allegations of genocide, which Israel vehemently denies.

The United Nations has issued warnings of an imminent famine in Gaza, with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reporting that famine could occur by May in northern Gaza and potentially spread across the enclave by July.

As pressure mounts on the Biden administration to reassess its support for Israel in light of the ongoing crisis, Pelosi’s endorsement of calls to halt weapons transfers underscores the growing urgency for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and the need to address the humanitarian plight of the people of Gaza.
