The Chief of the Pakistani Army, General Asim Munir, is in China on a four-day visit to improve military ties between the two countries. The main source of weapons for Pakistan is China, and the two nations have had long-standing bilateral relations that include military assistance. Gen. Munir has already visited Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the UK to discuss strategic security issues since entering office in November 2022. This is his fourth total journey overseas.
Normally, a newly appointed Pakistani Army chief departs for China within a few weeks, but this time there was a delay brought on by domestic problems. Pakistan’s political upheaval and the struggle between the coalition government and the opposition parties have exacerbated the nation’s economic issues. In order to cover its current financial gap in its external obligations at the time of the visit, Pakistan was facing increasing pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to raise at least $6 billion. Even though Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have already given Pakistan $3 billion, the IMF requires guarantees before releasing the remaining funds.
Although the visit’s financial motivation has not been made public, China is seen to be the only nation outside Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that can offer Pakistan the crucial backing it needs.
The security of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project is anticipated to be reviewed during General Munir’s visit, as it was during the visit of a high tri-service military delegation from Pakistan to China last year. A network of highways, trains, and energy infrastructure will be built as part of the CPEC, a key initiative of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with the goal of fostering regional connectivity and economic growth between the two nations. The $60 billion project is viewed as a game-changer for Pakistan’s economy and the safety of its infrastructure is of paramount significance to both nations.
Although there have been no formal pronouncements regarding the financial component of Gen. Munir’s visit, it is a significant chance for Pakistan to gain much-needed help. The tour’s goal is to strengthen bilateral defense ties between Pakistan and China.
