In order to ensure the preservation of all Afghans’ human and economic rights, the representative of Pakistan emphasized the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. He emphasized the importance of averting an economic collapse that would only make the current humanitarian catastrophe worse.
Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett also raised his voice and said that the de facto authorities continue to seek engagement as they listed their views on “progress made” and invited him to see the situation “with his own eyes.”
He made this assessment based on first-hand information from affected individuals living in Afghanistan. He interacted with members of Afghan civil society, particularly women, the de facto government, and the international community throughout his visits. He listened to the voices of human rights advocates, reporters, judges, and, most crucially, the victims and families of human rights atrocities. He valued having access to various regions of the nation, particularly delicate areas like prisons.
He emphasized that little has changed since his first visit to the country, calling attention to the courageous Afghan women and men who continue to fight peacefully for human rights in their nation, often at great personal danger. The Afghan people continue to endure suffering as the country continues to experience a human rights and humanitarian crisis.
