Pakistan Calls on UN to Take Stronger Role as Gaza Crisis Deepens
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the United Nations (UN) convened to revisit the Israel-Hamas conflict on Tuesday, Pakistan’s UN envoy, Munir Akram, delivered a compelling message, urging the international organization to play a more active role in resolving global conflicts, particularly focusing on the long-standing disputes in Palestine and Kashmir. Akram stressed the UN’s need to bolster its ability to address both longstanding and emerging threats to international peace and security. This plea coincided with the UN’s 79th anniversary and marked a significant turning point in the ongoing Gaza-Israel crisis.

A Plea for Humanitarian Relief

On the 17th day of the Gaza-Israel conflict, UN humanitarian agencies made an urgent plea for essential fuel deliveries and other relief supplies to mitigate the increasingly dire situation in the Gaza Strip. The situation in the enclave has deteriorated significantly, making swift action imperative. The international community must address this call for help to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population caught in the crossfire.

Global Diplomacy Stumbles

While the UN Security Council resumed its fourth meeting regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since October 7, diplomatic efforts have hit a stumbling block. With no agreement on actions to ease the plight of civilians affected by the war, the Council failed to adopt two previous draft resolutions. Russia’s plea for an immediate ceasefire lacked support, and a Brazilian draft proposing humanitarian pauses was vetoed by the United States. This impasse highlights the complexity and sensitivity of the situation.

Calls for Protecting Civilians and Seeking Peace

During the meeting, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the global responsibility in combating terrorism, citing the deaths of citizens from over 30 UN member states, including Americans, in the October 7 attacks. Blinken also urged Israel to ensure the safety of civilians and the continuous flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He called on Hamas to refrain from using Palestinian civilians as human shields.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the urgency of ending hostilities on both sides, calling for restraint to prevent further loss of lives. Guterres stressed the importance of a two-state solution as the foundation for peace in the Middle East, in accordance with UN resolutions and international law.

As the world watches the Gaza-Israel crisis unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that diplomatic solutions and international cooperation are essential to mitigate the suffering of civilians and work towards a sustainable peace in the region. The UN’s role in addressing global conflicts, as urged by Pakistan, remains critical in these challenging times.
