PA forces kill Islamic Jihad commander, sparking clashes in Jenin
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a rare and controversial move, Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces launched a significant operation in Jenin, killing Yazid Jaysa, a senior commander of the Islamic Jihad’s Jenin Brigade. The operation, described by the PA as a measure to “restore security and societal stability,” marks an unprecedented action against militant groups in the region. PA Brigadier General Anwar Rajab stated that the crackdown aimed to curb the influence of Iran-backed factions and prevent chaos.

General Rajab further claimed that PA forces intercepted a booby-trapped vehicle intended for an attack on civilians and security personnel. “This reflects an ISIS-like approach alien to our Palestinian values and contradicts the national struggle,” he asserted.

Civilian Casualties Raise Questions of Accountability

The operation, however, has drawn intense scrutiny following the death of 19-year-old civilian Rabhi Shalabi and the critical wounding of his 15-year-old cousin. Shalabi was reportedly shot while riding a motorcycle and, according to video footage cited by U.N. officials, had raised his hands in surrender moments before being killed.

Initially, PA officials denied involvement but later admitted responsibility after mounting public criticism and evidence surfaced. A PA official acknowledged the incident, stating, “We bear full responsibility and are committed to transparency in addressing such mistakes.”

Backlash from Palestinian Factions

The PA’s actions have triggered outrage among Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Hamas condemned the operation as an “attempt to end the resistance,” accusing the PA of aligning with Israeli interests. “This is unpatriotic behavior that serves the occupation,” said Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi.

Islamic Jihad, which lost its senior commander in the raid, called for widespread protests, framing the crackdown as an effort to suppress Palestinian resistance movements.

Public Outcry and Regional Ramifications

The events in Jenin have highlighted deep divisions within Palestinian society regarding the role of the PA in policing resistance groups. Critics argue that the crackdown undermines the broader Palestinian struggle for self-determination, while supporters see it as a necessary step to maintain law and order.

The killing of a civilian during the operation has further complicated the narrative, raising questions about the proportionality of PA security measures and the risk of alienating segments of the population.

Broader Implications for the Region

The situation in Jenin underscores the complexities of governance and resistance in the occupied territories. The PA’s actions, while aimed at stabilizing the region, may fuel tensions with both militant factions and the broader Palestinian community.

As protests and international criticism mount, the PA faces increasing pressure to justify its actions while navigating the delicate balance between security and public trust. Whether this operation signals a shift in the PA’s approach to militant groups remains to be seen.
