In a significant move demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, the Netherlands has announced its decision to deliver 18 F-16 fighter jets to support Ukraine’s defense efforts. Caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte revealed the decision on Friday, emphasizing the importance of the F-16 delivery in line with military support agreements for Ukraine.
“I informed President Zelenskiy of our government’s decision to prepare an initial 18 F-16 fighter aircraft for delivery to Ukraine,” stated Rutte on the social media platform X. He highlighted that the delivery of F-16s constitutes one of the pivotal elements outlined in the military support commitments made to Ukraine.
While the delivery of the fighter jets is contingent on obtaining an export permit from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and meeting specific criteria related to staff and infrastructure in Ukraine, Rutte refrained from providing a specific timeline for these decisions. Nevertheless, the announcement enables the allocation of funds and resources to commence the preparation of the planes for delivery.
“I spoke with Mark Rutte to thank the Dutch government for its decision to start preparing the initial 18 F-16 jets for their delivery to Ukraine,” expressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in response to the Dutch government’s announcement.
The Netherlands had previously dispatched its first batch of U.S.-made F-16s to a newly established training facility for Ukrainian pilots and staff in Romania just last month. Joining the Netherlands in supporting Ukraine, Denmark, Norway, and Belgium have also declared their intentions to provide F-16 jets. This comes after receiving approval from the U.S. government to send the aircraft to assist Ukraine in its defense efforts once pilot training is completed.
The provision of advanced fighter jets underscores the collective international response against Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and highlights the determination of nations to stand in unity against such blatant violations of sovereignty. As Ukraine faces a challenging period, the commitment of allies in providing military support further underscores the global resolve to uphold peace and security in the face of regional threats.
