On Friday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised Turkey for choosing to move forward with Finland’s membership application.
“I applaud Turkey’s decision to proceed with the ratification of Finland’s NATO membership. As a result, the security of Finland, Sweden, and NATO will all be strengthened, according to a statement from Stoltenberg.
He stated, “I’m hoping that the Turkish Grand National Assembly would vote to approve as soon as possible.
At a “critical time,” he said, Ankara’s action will make the alliance “stronger and safer.”
At their meeting last week at the NATO headquarters, Turkey, Finland, and Sweden. “Recognised that significant progress has been made in implementing the trilateral agreement inked in Madrid. And that speedy ratifications for Finland and Sweden have been achieved.”
Not whether they join at precisely the same moment. But rather that Finland and Sweden swiftly become full members of NATO, according to Stoltenberg.
His remarks came shortly after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Turkey will start the process of having its parliament accept Finland’s NATO membership.
“NATO will become stronger with Finland’s membership, and I believe it will play an active role in ensuring global security and stability,” Erdogan said at a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto in Ankara.
According to him, Turkey would keep up its negotiations with Sweden “on the basis of the alliance’s guiding principles and our strategy for combating terrorism.”
