The Lebanese Army has accused Israel of violating a newly implemented ceasefire agreement multiple times since its enforcement on Wednesday. The ceasefire marked the end of 14 months of hostilities between the Israeli Army and Hezbollah.
According to a statement issued by the Lebanese military, Israeli forces carried out several aerial violations and shelled Lebanese territory with various weapons after the ceasefire came into effect. These breaches occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting the Lebanese Army to engage with relevant authorities to address the violations.
Israeli Strikes and Casualties
In one incident, an Israeli airstrike targeted a vehicle in Markaba, Southern Lebanon, on Thursday, injuring two individuals. Additionally, Israeli tank fire was reported in multiple areas, including Ayta Al-Shaab, Bent Jbeil, Khiam, Taybe, Wazzani, and the outskirts of Kfarshouba. These incidents have heightened tensions despite the ceasefire agreement.
Terms of the Ceasefire
The ceasefire agreement stipulates that Israel will withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line, the de facto border, in a phased manner. Simultaneously, the Lebanese Army is required to deploy its forces across Southern Lebanon within 60 days. The implementation process is being overseen by the United States and France, though enforcement mechanisms remain unclear.
Humanitarian Toll of Recent Conflict
The 14-month-long conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian losses. According to Lebanese health authorities, Israeli attacks have claimed more than 3,960 lives, left over 16,500 injured, and displaced over 1 million people since October last year.
Monitoring and International Oversight
The Lebanese Army has stated its commitment to closely monitoring Israeli actions in collaboration with international authorities. However, further details about the mechanisms being employed to address these violations have not been disclosed.
The latest developments have raised questions about the durability of the ceasefire and the challenges of enforcing peace in the region amidst longstanding tensions.
