Jordan’s King Urges Ceasefire in Meeting with Biden Amid Escalating Gaza Crisis

In a high-level meeting between Jordan’s King Abdullah II and US President Joe Biden, urgent calls for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas reverberated through diplomatic channels. The meeting comes as tensions escalate over Israel’s planned ground invasion of Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip where more than 1.4 million people are seeking refuge amid relentless bombardment.

King Abdullah II stressed the critical need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing that the world “cannot afford” the potential consequences of Israel’s planned military action in Rafah. The city, already overwhelmed with displaced civilians, faces the looming threat of further devastation if a ground offensive ensues.

Amidst the diplomatic efforts, Hamas reported the deaths of three additional Israeli captives as a result of Israel’s ongoing airstrikes in Gaza. The escalating violence continues to exact a heavy toll on both Palestinian and Israeli populations, further underscoring the urgency of reaching a ceasefire agreement.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell joined the chorus of international voices calling for an end to the bloodshed, urging the United States and other allies to halt arms sales to Israel. Borrell emphasized that “too many people” are being killed in Gaza, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the conflict on civilian populations.

Since the outbreak of violence on October 7, Israel’s attacks on Gaza have resulted in a staggering death toll, with at least 28,340 Palestinians killed and 67,984 others wounded. In contrast, the death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks stands at 1,139, highlighting the vast disparity in casualties between the two sides.

As diplomatic efforts intensify to broker a ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the international community faces mounting pressure to act swiftly and decisively. The meeting between King Abdullah II and President Biden underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for concerted diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
