International Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza Intensify: Biden Urges Israel to Halt Rafah Offensive
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As tensions escalate in the Gaza region, international leaders are amplifying their calls for a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties. US President Joe Biden has joined the chorus of voices urging Israel to abandon its plans for a major military assault on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. The call comes in the wake of a dramatic hostage rescue operation by Israeli forces, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and raised concerns about the safety of vulnerable populations in the area.

The recent escalation in tensions began with a daring hostage rescue operation in Rafah by Israeli forces. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the operation as a success, it triggered airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of at least 67 Palestinians. The civilian casualties prompted widespread condemnation from the international community, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell criticizing Netanyahu for disregarding the humanitarian consequences of his actions.

During a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah at the White House, President Biden emphasized the need for a credible plan to ensure the safety and support of the vulnerable population in Rafah. He stressed that a military operation of such magnitude should not proceed without adequate measures to protect the civilians who have already been displaced multiple times due to ongoing violence in the region.

King Abdullah echoed Biden’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire to end the violence and prevent further civilian casualties. The international community has been increasingly alarmed by the rising death toll in Gaza, which has surpassed 28,000, including many women and children.

As diplomatic efforts continue, concerns persist about the fate of the civilian population trapped in Rafah. Aid agencies and world leaders have warned of the catastrophic consequences of a military offensive in the densely populated city, where hundreds of thousands of families have sought refuge amid the ongoing violence.

With tensions escalating in the Gaza region, the international community is intensifying its efforts to broker a ceasefire and prevent further civilian casualties. President Biden’s call for Israel to halt its planned offensive in Rafah underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, one that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all civilians caught in the crossfire.
