France Investigates fans for “Genocide Olympics” Banner at Olympics

French authorities have launched an investigation into actions deemed “anti-Semitic” following an incident at the 2024 Paris Olympics. During a football match between Israel and Paraguay, fans displayed a banner protesting the Israeli army’s attacks on Gaza. The banner, which read “Genocide Olympics” was accompanied by Palestinian flags.

The incident occurred at the Parc des Princes Stadium, where Paraguay won the match 4-2. The Paris Organizing Committee for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (COJOP2024) has filed a complaint, prompting the Paris Prosecutor’s Office to confirm an investigation into the actions of the fans involved.

French President Emmanuel Macron and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have both stated that Israel will not be banned from participating in the Olympics, despite comparisons to the situation with Russia. Macron emphasized that Israeli athletes should compete under their own flags.

The Paris Olympics, which commenced on July 26, are set to run until August 11, attracting approximately 16 million tourists. Over 10,500 athletes from 206 delegations are participating in the event.

The investigation into the banner “Genocide Olympics” comes amid ongoing tensions related to Israeli actions in Gaza. Since October 7 last year, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of 39,324 Palestinians, including 16,172 children and 10,798 women, with 90,830 people injured.

The display of the banner and subsequent investigation have sparked significant controversy, reflecting the broader geopolitical tensions that have impacted international sports events. The outcome of the investigation remains to be seen, as authorities continue to address the implications of such protests on the global stage of the Olympic Games.

The prosecutor’s office stated that fans displaying the “Genocide Olympics” banner could face charges of aggravated incitement to racial hatred. Additionally, anti-cybercrime officers are investigating the leak of Israeli athletes’ personal data, including blood test results and login credentials, which was released on social media. Israel has warned France about this cyber harassment and linked the data breach to Iran-backed groups.
