In order to increase accountability for the WPS agenda’s implementation in peacekeeping and humanitarian contexts, the Department of Peace Operations and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs organized a high-level conversation.
The event, which came after the UN Security Council’s yearly open debate on Women, Peace, and Security, was sponsored by the Permanent Representatives of Canada, Ecuador, Germany, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States to the UN as well as the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security.
Women continue to be underrepresented in many conflict and post-conflict contexts, 22 years after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
Participants agreed that although progress has been made, much more work needs to be done to guarantee that coordinated leadership and accountability are used to increase the involvement of women in crisis and humanitarian circumstances.
