With mediators struggling to achieve a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict, Israeli forces have intensified their bombing of Rafah, launching air and ground assaults overnight. As tanks pushed further west, residents reported heavy gunfire and fierce clashes between Israeli troops and Hamas-led Palestinian fighters.
Israeli tanks, controlling the border area with Egypt, conducted several incursions into the city, catching many residents off guard. Several were wounded and evacuated after the night of intense conflict. “The occupation forces seem to be aiming for the beach area of Rafah,” a Palestinian man shared, describing the overnight attacks as tactical moves that involved heavy fire and subsequent retreats.
The Israeli military also advanced into the Al-Bureij camp in central Gaza, continuing heavy bombardments on nearby areas, resulting in numerous casualties. Armed wings of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other groups reported attacking Israeli forces in central and southern Gaza.
Efforts by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, supported by the United States, to broker a ceasefire have yet to succeed. Despite attempts to negotiate a deal that includes the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinians detained by Israel, progress remains elusive.
Since a brief truce in November, negotiations have failed repeatedly. Hamas demands a permanent end to the conflict, while Israel is only willing to consider temporary pauses. A Hamas official accused Israel and the US of prolonging the war. “We have shown all the flexibility needed to reach a deal, but the Israeli occupation continues to refuse any commitment to end the aggression and pull its forces from Gaza.”
