Erdogan Invites Elon Musk to Build Tesla Factory in Turkey, Discusses Tech Collaboration
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a remarkable development at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan extended an inviting hand to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, urging him to consider establishing a Tesla factory in Turkey. This groundbreaking proposal was made during a meeting at the Turkish House, an iconic skyscraper near the United Nations, as reported by Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu news agency. Erdogan’s visit to the United States, primarily to attend the UN General Assembly, paved the way for this pivotal discussion.

Turkish President Seeks Tesla Partnership

Erdogan’s overture to Musk is based on the existing collaboration between Tesla and Turkish suppliers, as noted by Musk himself during their meeting. The Turkish President emphasized the importance of this partnership and expressed his nation’s eagerness to deepen ties with the electric vehicle giant. Although Tesla has not yet responded to these overtures, Musk’s acknowledgment of Turkey as a prominent candidate for the next Tesla factory is a promising sign.

Musk Mulls Over Turkey as Next Factory Location

While Tesla’s immediate response remains pending, Elon Musk’s statement about Turkey being a significant contender for the location of their next factory hints at the potential magnitude of this collaboration. With six factories currently operational and another in progress in Mexico, Tesla is on an aggressive expansion drive. Musk had previously stated his intent to select a new factory location by the end of this year, and Turkey’s appeal may well shape that decision.

Elon Musk Explores AI and Starlink Collaboration with Turkey

The meeting between Erdogan and Musk extended beyond the prospect of a Tesla factory in Turkey. The Turkish President expressed a keen interest in collaborating with Musk’s companies on cutting-edge technologies, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and Starlink, SpaceX’s ambitious satellite internet venture. Musk responded positively to Erdogan’s proposals, indicating his willingness to cooperate and work towards obtaining the necessary licenses for offering Starlink satellite services in Turkey. Furthermore, Erdogan extended an invitation to Musk to attend the Turkish aerospace and technology festival, Teknofest, scheduled at the end of September in Izmir. Elon Musk, appreciative of the offer, confirmed his attendance.

Musk’s Multifaceted Engagements

Elon Musk’s engagements extend far beyond Tesla. His upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California highlights his role in shaping the future of technology on a global scale. The focus of their talks is expected to revolve around artificial intelligence, underscoring Musk’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge tech innovations.

Tesla, under Musk’s leadership, has expressed interest in establishing a factory in India, with the aim of producing low-cost electric vehicles, demonstrating the company’s ambition to extend its global footprint and reach new markets.

In addition to his work at Tesla and SpaceX, Musk made headlines in 2022 by acquiring X, formerly known as Twitter, for a staggering $44 billion. This acquisition underscores Musk’s involvement in shaping social media and free speech, a topic of particular relevance given his relationship with the Turkish government. Musk, while considering himself a free speech absolutist, has had to navigate a complex landscape, sometimes complying with Turkish government demands to censor content, while at other times, his social media company has taken a stand against Turkish court orders.

As the world eagerly awaits Tesla’s response to President Erdogan’s proposal, the potential collaboration between the electric vehicle giant and Turkey holds the promise of reshaping not only the automotive industry but also the landscape of advanced technology in the country and beyond.
