Curfew Lifted in Kirkuk as Deadly Unrest Subsides: Prime Minister Calls for Inquiry
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant turn of events, a curfew that had been imposed on the ethnically diverse city of Kirkuk in Iraq was lifted on Sunday, following a tumultuous episode that saw deadly clashes between rival protest groups. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had instituted the curfew on Saturday evening, as tensions erupted between Kurdish residents on one side and Turkmen and Arabs on the other, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives. This incident has rekindled historic animosities in Kirkuk, a city historically disputed between the federal government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdistan region to the north. As the city begins to regain stability, Prime Minister Sudani has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unrest.

Rival Protests Turn Violent

Saturday’s clash in Kirkuk took a grim turn as rival protests escalated into violent confrontations. Four Kurds lost their lives, and 15 people sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos. Although health officials confirmed that at least three of the victims had been fatally shot, the identity of the perpetrators remained shrouded in uncertainty. Security forces had been stationed as a barrier to keep the opposing groups separated. Shockingly, reports indicated that these forces had to resort to firing warning shots to disperse the Kurdish protesters, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Historic Tensions Flare in Kirkuk

Tensions had been festering in Kirkuk for nearly a week before erupting into the recent turmoil. This northern city has a long history of disputes between the federal government in Baghdad and the authorities in the autonomous Kurdistan region. In 2014, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the peshmerga, the security forces of the Kurdistan region, assumed control of Kirkuk, an oil-rich area of northern Iraq. However, federal troops reclaimed the city in autumn 2017, following escalating tensions related to a referendum on Kurdish independence. These historical fault lines have resurfaced, raising concerns about the city’s fragile stability.

Prime Minister Demands Investigation

With the situation in Kirkuk now relatively stable following the lifting of the curfew, Prime Minister Sudani has called for a commission of inquiry to investigate the tragic incident. The inquiry aims to uncover the circumstances leading to the deadly unrest and to determine accountability for the lives lost during the clashes. The need for a comprehensive investigation underscores the seriousness of the situation and the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Kirkuk.

In conclusion, the lifting of the curfew in Kirkuk brings a semblance of calm to a city fraught with ethnic tensions and historical disputes. The deadly clashes between rival groups have rekindled concerns about the region’s stability, highlighting the complexities of Iraq’s multi-ethnic landscape. As Prime Minister Sudani’s call for an inquiry takes center stage, the world watches closely, hoping for answers that can help prevent further violence and strife in this historically sensitive area.
