Crisis Unfolds as Israel Orders Urgent Evacuation of Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a move described as “impossible” by medical staff, Israel has ordered the evacuation of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, leaving thousands of displaced people and critically ill patients in a dire state. The one-hour evacuation notice has sparked panic and fear among the already vulnerable population, creating a humanitarian crisis in the midst of the ongoing conflict.

Medical Compound Faces Unprecedented Challenges

Amid relentless bombardment and siege by Israeli forces, Al-Shifa Hospital, a critical medical facility in Gaza, is grappling with insurmountable challenges. The facility, home to approximately 7,000 people, including patients in critical condition, lacks the necessary ambulances to transfer individuals to safety. The dire situation has left at least 300 patients, some in serious or critical condition, along with thousands of displaced families stranded without a means of evacuation.

Premature Babies in Peril

The unfolding crisis at Al-Shifa Hospital is further exacerbated by the plight of 35 premature babies who have been without incubators for eight days due to a lack of oxygen and electricity. Tragically, four babies lost their lives on Friday, and five others are now severely ill. The desperate need for evacuation is hindered by the absence of transportation means in Gaza City and northern areas, where a scarcity of fuel has rendered conventional evacuation methods impossible, according to medical professionals on the ground.

Israeli Forces Fail to Provide Solutions

Israeli forces instructed the evacuation through an unconventional route, adding to the chaos and uncertainty. Al-Rashid street, rather than the usual Salah al-Din street, was designated for evacuation, with no alternative solutions, means of transportation, or fuel for ambulances provided by the Israeli army. The absence of essential resources has left doctors and hospital staff grappling with the impossible task of evacuating a large number of people on foot, intensifying the already dire humanitarian situation.

The Israeli army’s claim of a Hamas command center beneath the hospital, though unsubstantiated, has further complicated the situation. While Israel alleges a security threat, hospital staff and Hamas vehemently reject these assertions.

As the international community closely watches this unfolding crisis, urgent appeals for intervention and humanitarian assistance are becoming increasingly imperative to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of those caught in the crossfire.
