Congress’ 2025 Priority: Protecting Netanyahu from arrest by Sanctioning ICC
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

While millions of Americans face economic challenges, Congress has chosen a controversial priority for 2025. Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R.23. This bill aims to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. These leaders face charges for alleged war crimes in Gaza, including using starvation as a weapon of war.

What Is H.R.23?

H.R.23 proposes severe measures against the ICC and its supporters. These include:

– Imposing sanctions on ICC officials and their families.

– Denying visas and blocking property transactions of those sanctioned.

– Cutting funds already allocated to the ICC.

– Blocking future funding for the ICC’s investigations.

These actions intend to shield Israeli leaders from accountability. The bill sends a clear message that U.S. support for Israel supersedes international justice.

Why the Double Standard?

President Biden previously endorsed the ICC’s warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Many now question why the same standard does not apply to Israeli leaders. If international justice is legitimate for one case, why not for others? This inconsistency undermines the ICC’s credibility and global justice.

How Should Congress Respond?

Congress should reject H.R.23 to uphold international law and prevent selective justice. Shielding Israeli leaders sets a dangerous precedent and weakens global accountability mechanisms. The ICC must remain independent to ensure fair investigations and trials for all.

The Call for Global Accountability

The world needs clear standards for justice. Leaders from all nations must face accountability for their actions, regardless of alliances. Undermining the ICC weakens its authority and risks promoting impunity.

H.R.23 threatens the principles of international law. Congress should focus on justice, not favoritism. Upholding the ICC’s work ensures fairness for all and strengthens global accountability.
