Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs summons US Envoy

Beijing, 4 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng summoned US Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns for an emergency meeting.

On behalf of the Chinese government, Foreign Minister lodged stern representations and strong protests against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region.

He stated that Pelosi’s action in defiance of the universal condemnation is a deliberate provocation and a playing with fire.

This visit is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués.

He further said that this move has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations as it seriously infringes on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Chinese vice foreign minister stressed that this visit can gravely undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. This move will consequently send a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence”.

Strong protest to US behavior

Chinese Foreign Minister stated that for quite some time, the United States has been speaking and acting oppositely.

He protested that the US has been constantly distorting, altering, obscuring, and hollowing out the one-China principle in an attempt to cross the red line and make ’breakthroughs’. The US is trying to play the ‘Taiwan card’ by hook or by crook.

Moreover, he mentioned that the US has integrated Taiwan into its ‘Indo-Pacific’ strategy. Currently, the US is helping Taiwan improve ‘asymmetric military capability’ by upgrading its ties and increasing arms sales.

He further objected that the US rather than restraining Pelosi’s willful behavior, connived her having her own way resulting in escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

A warning of strict reaction

The Chinese foreign minister stated that China will take necessary actions and respond with firm countermeasures to this issue.

He mentioned that “Anyone who attempts to seek political gains by manipulating the Taiwan question will go nowhere. Anyone who harbors the illusion of gaining political legacy by playing the “Taiwan card” will be nailed to the historical pillar of ignominy.”

He called upon the US to take credible measures to undo the adverse impact of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

He further reiterated that the US must not meddle in Taiwan and interfere in China’s internal affairs and that it must stop stirring up troubles on the Taiwan question.

Stern Chinese Stance

The Foreign Minister sternly stressed that Taiwan is China’s Taiwan, and will eventually return to the embrace of the motherland. He added that nothing is more sacred than protecting China’s sovereignty, unity and reunification.

Moreover, he mentioned that the US must restrain from seeking a new Cold War and revitalize its alliances against China.

He further stated that the capability of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and achieve reunification must not be underestimated by any country or individual.
