China’s Xi announces steps to support ‘Global South’ at G20 summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s commitment to bolstering the “Global South” during the recent G20 summit, held in Rio de Janeiro. The event brought together world leaders to discuss key global economic and political challenges. In his opening remarks, President Xi unveiled a series of strategic measures aimed at advancing growth and cooperation among developing nations.

Eight Actions for Global Development

President Xi announced a set of eight measures that China plans to implement in support of the Global South. Central to these initiatives is the enhancement of the “high quality” Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This long-standing policy focuses on large-scale investments in infrastructure projects throughout developing countries, seeking to improve connectivity and economic growth.

Additionally, Xi emphasized China’s position as a consistent and active partner of developing countries. “China has always been a member of the ‘Global South’, a reliable and long-term partner of developing countries, and an activist and doer in support of global development,” he stated.

Open Science Initiative Unveiled

Highlighting collaborative efforts, President Xi announced the launch of an “Open Science International Cooperation Initiative” in partnership with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union (AU). This program is designed to facilitate the transfer of scientific and technological advancements to developing nations. The initiative underscores a shared commitment to empowering the Global South with innovation and knowledge.

“China supports the G20 in carrying out practical cooperation for the benefit of the Global South,” Xi said. He added that China’s imports from developing nations are expected to exceed $8 trillion by 2030, signaling a significant boost to trade and economic integration.

China’s Strategic Role Amidst Global Shifts

President Xi’s emphasis on collective growth reflects China’s intention to play a key role in reshaping global economic alliances. The statement comes as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also pushes for a stronger presence of the Global South in global policymaking. Lula has championed the African Union’s formal inclusion in the G20, similar to the status of the European Union, which he sees as essential for inclusive global governance.

The AU’s participation in this year’s summit marks a significant milestone, as it represents a step towards formal recognition of African nations in multilateral discussions. Xi’s visit to Brazil will culminate in talks with President Lula in Brasília, further underlining their shared vision for the Global South.

A New Era for the G20?

As developing nations seek a louder voice on the world stage, questions arise about the future trajectory of the G20. How will the growing influence of the Global South affect the dynamics within this powerful group that currently accounts for 85% of global GDP, over 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population?
