Senior diplomats from China and Brazil recently met in Johannesburg on July 24, South Africa, to discuss and strengthen their strategic cooperation. As the largest developing countries in their respective hemispheres, China and Brazil share common interests. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of China, and Chief Advisor of the Presidency of Brazil, Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim, explored avenues for collaboration during their meeting on Monday. This partnership aims to foster mutual trust, synergy between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Brazil’s reindustrialization strategy, and explore areas of common interest and growth. The talks took place during the 13th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security in the South African capital.

Strengthening Strategic Trust and Synergy

China and Brazil, being significant players in their regions, recognize the value of deepening strategic mutual trust and cooperation. Wang Yi emphasized the need for solidarity and cooperation between emerging market countries and developing nations. To achieve this, the two nations will focus on building strategic trust and enhancing synergy between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Brazil’s reindustrialization strategy. The goal is to create a model of cooperation that sets an example for other countries with similar economic profiles.

BRICS Cooperation and South-South Solidarity

During the meeting, Wang Yi highlighted the importance of the BRICS mechanism as a platform for South-South cooperation. He stated that this partnership presented a historic opportunity for growth and development. China aims to work closely with Brazil to strengthen communication and coordination within the BRICS framework. By doing so, they can address the diverse needs and concerns of emerging market economies and developing countries. This collaborative effort will contribute to a multi-polar world and promote democratization in international relations.

 A Comprehensive and Multilateral Partnership

Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim reaffirmed China’s status as an essential strategic partner for Brazil. He commended the fruitful nature of the all-round cooperation between the two nations. In the pursuit of further strengthening this relationship, Brazil expressed its commitment to implementing the agreements reached by their respective heads of state. Amorim outlined the desire to deepen practical cooperation in various sectors, such as aviation, automotive, high-tech, green economy, and climate change. Moreover, Brazil is eager to enhance collaboration with China within the BRICS framework and other multilateral initiatives, advocating for multilateralism and global peace.
