China Advocates for Nuclear-Weapon-Free Middle East, Urges Global Cooperation
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

China has called for intensified international efforts to support the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the urgency of creating a region free from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) during the fourth session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and other Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Urgent Call to Address Trust Deficit in the Middle East

Geng Shuang underscored the pressing need for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, citing the profound impact of nuclear weapons and WMDs on regional peace and stability. He stated that these weapons have been a major factor contributing to a trust deficit in the region, emphasizing that addressing this issue is crucial for fostering reconciliation and cooperation among Middle Eastern countries.

Geng highlighted the devastating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that violence is not a sustainable solution and urged all parties to embrace dialogue over confrontation.

China’s Commitment to Global Security and Cooperation

China expressed its steadfast support for establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and WMDs, emphasizing its role in curbing the proliferation of such weapons. Geng asserted that this move would safeguard the authority and effectiveness of the international non-proliferation regime, reduce the risk of an arms race, and provide a vital mechanism for ensuring long-term regional peace and security.

Geng outlined China’s approach to global and regional security dilemmas, advocating for a concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security. He stressed the importance of building a balanced and effective international security architecture that prioritizes dialogue, partnership, and mutual benefit over confrontation and zero-sum games.

Condemnation of Provocative Statements and Call for International Cooperation

Expressing China’s concern over recent statements by Israeli officials regarding the use of nuclear weapons in the Gaza Strip, Geng condemned such remarks as irresponsible and disturbing. He called for the immediate retraction of these statements and urged Israel to accede to the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Effectively connecting his condemnation to broader international concerns, Geng emphasized the necessity of maintaining the authority and effectiveness of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime. He called on countries within the region to strengthen their solidarity, forge mutual trust, and work towards establishing a favorable political and diplomatic atmosphere.

In conclusion, China reasserted its commitment to a nuclear strategy of self-defense and pledged to actively contribute to the maintenance of peace, security, and stability in the Middle East. Geng expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with other nations to forge consensus at the conference, injecting new impetus into the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons.
