Blinken appeals for serenity as tensions rise
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In response to a spike in violence that has the region on edge, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on Israel and the Palestinians to defuse tensions on Monday. The Biden administration is concerned about the bloodshed. As it seeks to work with Israel’s new right-wing government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Blinken did not publicly provide any specific suggestions for defusing the crisis, aside from calls for restraint and de-escalation. And it was not immediately evident after his discussion with Netanyahu that the administration would be making any. Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Palestine, will meet with Blinken on Tuesday.
In the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, Blinken arrived during one of the bloodiest combat outbreaks in recent memory. Ten Palestinians were killed by an Israeli military raid on Jenin, a sensitive West Bank town, on Thursday. On Friday, a Palestinian gunman murdered seven people in front of a synagogue in an east Jerusalem settlement. The following morning in another part of east Jerusalem, a 13-year-old Palestinian kid shot and injured two Israelis.
Blinken was more direct, stating that while the United States supports the expansion of the Abraham Accords. A two-state solution is necessary to end the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Prior to Blinken’s arrival in Israel on Monday, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that an Israeli soldier had murdered. He killed a Palestinian in the volatile city of Hebron, raising the total number of Palestinian fatalities in January to 35.
Following a surge of Palestinian attacks against Israelis in the spring of 2022 that claimed 19 lives. Israeli authorities began conducting arrest raids in the West Bank for months.
However, it has increased significantly this month during the first few weeks of Netanyahu’s new far-right cabinet. It has pledged to adopt a strong approach towards the Palestinians and increase settlement building.
The Israeli response, which included demolishing the homes of the assailants’ relatives, is seen by the Palestinians. As collective punishment that violates international law.
The unrest has added yet another item to Blinken’s lengthy diplomatic agenda in Jerusalem. Already included the war in Ukraine, tensions with Iran, the crises in Lebanon and Syria. All of which have a significant impact on the relationship between the United States and Israel. However, with both of those issues stalled and little hope of any resumption in negotiations. Meanwhile the administration is merely trying to keep the concepts alive.
