UK Supports Palestinian Authority’s Preparation for Gaza Takeover, Defense Secretary Reveals
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a noteworthy development, Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has disclosed that British military personnel are actively aiding the Palestinian Authority in preparations to assume control of the Gaza Strip. Shapps revealed that the British Support Team, collaborating with US and Canadian counterparts, has been stationed in Ramallah for over a decade, working closely with elements of the Palestinian security services.

During a meeting with the team and PA Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Ziad Hab Al-Reeh in Ramallah, Shapps expressed the possibility of expanding the UK’s presence to facilitate the Palestinian Authority in a potential power transition in Gaza. He emphasized the need for a robust Palestinian Authority capable of effective governance, acknowledging the substantial international assistance required for this endeavor.

Shapps outlined a vision for addressing the ongoing crisis, asserting, “When something really terrible happens, what we absolutely need to do is get something that is better than what was there before.” He proposed leveraging the current crisis to enhance the security of Israelis and improve the lives of Palestinians. Shapps advocated for the creation of an international coalition, led by Arab states, to contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza both on the ground and administratively.

The Defense Secretary’s visit to Ramallah aimed to assess the Palestinian Authority’s capacity and capabilities, with a specific focus on the British team contributing to capacity-building alongside their American counterparts. Shapps underscored the importance of dialogue with the Palestinian Authority to understand and enhance their capabilities.

In a marked contrast to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance on security control over Gaza, Shapps emphasized the potential role of the Palestinian Authority in governing the region. The UK’s diplomatic efforts and on-the-ground support signify a commitment to finding comprehensive solutions that contribute to stability and security in the region.

Shapps, who is of Jewish descent, also engaged in diplomatic discussions with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, lighting candles to mark the first day of Hanukkah. The Defense Secretary’s visit and diplomatic engagements underscore the nuanced and collaborative approach the UK is taking in the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
