Day 631 of Russia-Ukraine War: Escalation, Sanctions, and Trials Unfold
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the Russia-Ukraine conflict stubbornly stretches into its 631st day, the war-torn landscape witnesses new developments and escalating tensions. On Thursday, November 16, 2023, the situation unfolds with fighting intensifying, political dynamics shifting, and trials unveiling shocking revelations.

Escalation of Violence

Russian-occupied parts of southern Kherson become the new battleground as Ukrainian troops cross the Dnipro River. Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-installed governor, confirms the presence of Ukrainian forces operating in small groups along a 20km stretch, prompting an increased deployment of Russian assets. Tragically, the town of Selydove, northwest of Donetsk, bears the brunt of the conflict, with four Russian missiles hitting the area, claiming two lives and leaving several injured. Amidst Russian shelling in the Zaporizhia region, two rescue workers lose their lives, underscoring the perilous conditions faced by those responding to the aftermath of attacks.

Political Maneuvers and Diplomatic Strife

On the political front, the European Union takes a decisive stance against Russia. Diplomats reveal the European Commission’s proposal for a ban on diamond and liquid petroleum gas imports from Russia. Additionally, the plan includes tightening the price cap on Russian oil, forming the 12th package of sanctions. However, Russia’s foreign ministry dismisses these measures, labeling them as part of a “hybrid war” led by Western countries, with Maria Zakharova accusing the EU of being Washington’s “useful idiot.” Hungary’s European affairs minister calls for a “period of reflection” on the EU’s policy towards Ukraine, emphasizing Budapest’s reluctance to support further aid until such discussions occur.

Trials and Personal Tragedies

In a military court in St Petersburg, Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old Russian woman, faces trial for the “terrorism” charge in connection with the assassination of military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky. Prosecutors allege Trepova carried out the attack under orders from Ukraine, implicating her in collaboration with anti-Kremlin activists. The trial reveals the chilling details of Tatarsky’s death, where a bust presented by Trepova exploded, resulting in his demise and injuring more than 50 others. Meanwhile, the wife of imprisoned Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza voices concern over his deteriorating health in a Siberian penal colony, citing inhumane conditions and lack of medical care.

Weaponry and International Dynamics

As the conflict rages on, Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport reports a surge in global interest in its Lancet drone. Despite international inquiries, the weapon will not be exported due to the high demand within Russian armed forces. The Lancet drone, having proven its efficacy in real combat, continues to be a significant factor on the Ukrainian battlefield.

The 631st day of the Russia-Ukraine war unfolds with a grim tapestry of violence, political posturing, and personal tragedies.
