Princess Diana’s Iconic ‘Black Sheep’ Sweater Sells at Auction for a Whopping $1.1 Million

In a stunning turn of events, Princess Diana’s legendary ‘Black Sheep’ sweater, worn during her early days as a royal, has fetched an astonishing $1.1 million at auction, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid for a garment once belonging to the beloved princess. This remarkable sale, organized by Sotheby’s, saw fervent online bidding that extended beyond expectations, as the red sweater adorned with a lone black sheep among a sea of white ones became an enduring symbol of Princess Diana’s life. This sale not only breaks records but also offers a glimpse into the poignant story behind this iconic piece of fashion history.

A Record-Breaking Auction

The ‘Black Sheep’ sweater, which Princess Diana donned at a polo match shortly after her engagement to Prince Charles in June 1981, had a modest initial selling estimate of $50,000 to $80,000. However, the auction’s intensity surpassed all expectations as a whirlwind of online bidders vied for this historical relic. Sotheby’s had to extend the sale by several minutes due to the avalanche of bids. In the final 15 minutes, the price skyrocketed from a mere $190,000 to an astounding $1.1 million, leaving spectators and collectors in awe. The identity of the victorious bidder remains a well-guarded secret.

This remarkable figure not only shatters previous records but also reaffirms Princess Diana’s enduring allure and the continued fascination with her legacy. Notably, it surpasses the $604,000 achieved earlier in the year for her Infanta-style ball gown, making it the highest price ever paid for a garment belonging to Princess Diana.

The Symbolism Behind Diana’s Sweater

The ‘Black Sheep’ sweater, created by then-little-known designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne of the knitting company Warm and Wonderful, holds a deeper significance beyond its fashion appeal. Diana’s choice to wear this whimsically themed sweater, with a solitary black sheep standing out from the crowd of woolly white sheep, now appears to carry profound symbolism. In retrospect, it hints at Diana’s tumultuous journey as a member of the British royal family.

Unlike many of the items associated with Diana’s later life, this sweater represents a time of innocence and anticipation before the trials and tribulations she would face in the public eye. Sotheby’s noted on their website that, “The sweater came before so much of the turmoil that ultimately defined Diana’s life.” Thus, this sweater serves as a poignant reminder of Diana’s early days as a princess-to-be, resonating with admirers around the world.

The Unexpected Journey of the ‘Black Sheep’ Sweater

The journey of the ‘Black Sheep’ sweater itself is an unexpected tale. Weeks after Diana was photographed in the sweater, the designers received a letter reporting damage to one of its sleeves, with a request for repair or replacement. Assuming the original sweater had been fixed and sent to another customer, the designers sent Diana a new one. However, it was not until March 2023 that Joanna Osborne rediscovered the original sweater in a small box in her attic.

The auction presented not only the ‘Black Sheep’ sweater but also included the letter requesting repair and a thank-you note from Diana’s private secretary, Oliver Everett. Sotheby’s catalogue note confirmed, “In conjunction with a photo-matched authentication by Sotheby’s, this lost sheep jumper found in an attic is confirmed to be the original sheep jumper worn by Princess Diana over 40 years ago.”

The online bidding for this cherished relic commenced on August 31st, the 26th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death in a Paris car crash. This timing added a poignant layer to the auction, reminding the world of Princess Diana’s enduring legacy and her lasting impact on both fashion and hearts worldwide.
