Chinese Vice Premier Urges Swift Relief and Reconstruction Efforts in Flood-Hit Regions
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the wake of devastating floods that have swept across northern China, Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has called for intensified relief efforts and swift post-disaster reconstruction to facilitate the affected regions’ return to normalcy. Zhang, a key member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, embarked on an inspection mission in Hebei Province, where he emphasized the critical need for urgent action in the face of this natural calamity.

A Hands-On Assessment of the Situation

During his visit to the city of Zhuozhou, a region profoundly impacted by the floods, Zhang personally surveyed the situation. Temporary shelters housing displaced residents became the focus of his attention. He examined the efforts underway to resettle the local populace and clear obstructed roads. Additionally, Zhang evaluated the accessibility of vital resources like water, electricity, and daily essentials, highlighting their significance in restoring normalcy.

Vigilance and Preparedness in the Face of Lingering Threats

As floodwaters gradually recede, Zhang reiterated the imperative for local authorities to remain vigilant. He emphasized the necessity of reinforcing dike patrols and maintaining a robust emergency response mechanism. Preventing secondary disasters, including landslides triggered by weakened terrain, became a pivotal aspect of Zhang’s message, underscoring the need to avert further catastrophes.

Swift Action for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction

In his efforts to expedite recovery, Zhang directed a comprehensive approach. Urban areas required immediate attention to drain excess floodwater, clear accumulated debris, and sanitize the environment. The Vice Premier emphasized the removal of safety hazards from buildings, a step crucial for ensuring the safe return of residents to their homes. Furthermore, Zhang called for concerted endeavors to meet essential needs, particularly medical requirements and a stable market supply, reflecting his dedication to holistic rehabilitation.

Zhang Guoqing’s inspection centered on strengthening relief work and accelerating post-disaster reconstruction in flood-hit regions. His calls for intensified efforts echoed throughout his visit, resonating with the urgency of the situation.

As torrential rainstorms and floods wreaked havoc across northern and northeastern China, the toll on lives and infrastructure grew increasingly apparent. Data from insurance companies underscored the magnitude of the losses, with claims totaling 6.24 billion yuan, and a substantial 264 million yuan disbursed to date.

Rescue teams, equipped with essential tools and vehicles, were swiftly dispatched to regions ravaged by the floods. Their activities spanned reinforcement of river embankments, road repairs, relocating affected residents, and restoring power and communication networks.

The central government’s response has been resolute, as evidenced by the allocation of 520 million yuan from central natural disaster relief funds, as declared by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management. These funds will empower local governments to execute disaster relief, emergency response measures, resident relocation, hazard assessment, and home restoration.

In the wake of this natural catastrophe, Vice Premier Zhang’s presence and directives have underscored the Chinese government’s commitment to promptly restoring normalcy to flood-hit regions. The challenges are formidable, yet the determination to overcome them remains unwavering, as a nation unites in the face of adversity.
