Controversy Mounts as Tunisia Denies Expulsion of Black Refugees, NGO Claims Illegality
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Tunisia faces escalating scrutiny as allegations of expelling Black refugees persist despite official denials. Avocats Sans Frontieres, a prominent NGO, has deemed the expulsions illegal, exacerbating the government’s backlash. The international community continues to chastise Tunisia over its treatment of sub-Saharan migrants, challenging the government’s insistence on non-expulsion to bordering nations.

Illegal Expulsions Prompt Outcry

Avocats Sans Frontieres, the international humanitarian organization, has categorically labeled Tunisia’s expulsions of migrants as “illegal.” The NGO, known as “Lawyers without Borders,” emphatically stated that these actions violated the safety and human rights of migrants. In their statement to Al Jazeera, the organization declared, “Migrants should never be subjected to returning to perilous or inhospitable conditions that threaten their safety or rights, such as the ‘no man’s lands’ between borders.”

Minister Denies Expulsions Amid UN Concerns

Tunisian Interior Minister Kamel Fekih directly contradicted the United Nations’ apprehensions regarding the expulsions. Fekih vigorously rejected statements made by UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, asserting that the UN’s concerns were riddled with inaccuracies and falsehoods. According to the TAP news agency, Fekih retorted, “The allegations about expulsion operations are unfounded.” The minister vehemently maintained that the information needed validation to avoid detrimental consequences for the nation’s security forces, who have been actively involved in rescue operations.

The discourse around migrants and refugees in Tunisia has reached a boiling point since President Kais Saied’s speech in February, which raised concerns about the demographic balance due to Black sub-Saharan African migration. The coastal city of Sfax has become a focal point for the crisis, with clashes
