A senior Belarusian official was quoted as stating on Sunday that Western nations gave Belarus no choice but to deploy Russian tactical nuclear weapons and should be careful not to “cross red lines” on important strategic problems.
The withdrawal of the weapons following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 was rational, according to Alexander Volfovich, state secretary of Belarus’ Security Council, because the US had offered security guarantees and levied no penalties.

Last week, Russia made a decision to place tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil with the intention of making specific gains on the battlefield.
Russia claims that its “special military operation” in Ukraine was intended to thwart the “collective west” from using Ukraine as a front to launch a proxy war and demolish Moscow.
“Therefore, one of the measures in strategic deterrence is the placement of tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil. Western politicians won’t cross this line, of course, if there is still any justification in their minds, according to Volfovich.

Although Lukashenko said last week that the weapons were already in motion, it is currently unknown when they will be deployed.
Although the United States has condemned the potential use of nuclear weapons in Belarus, it maintains that its position on their use has not changed.
Long before the invasion, Belarus was subject to Western sanctions because of Lukashenko’s crackdown on human rights, particularly the repression of large-scale demonstrations against what his detractors claimed was his fraudulent reelection in 2020.
Following their liberation from Soviet authority, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan consented to having their weapons taken away and sent back to Russia as part of global efforts to stop proliferation.
