The foreign minister of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, highlighted three crucial areas for human rights protection at a regional meeting amid the recent string of international crises.
She remarked during the start of the Regional Conversation on Human Rights (RCHR), which was broadcast online from Jakarta, that rising levels of hunger and poverty, pervasive inequality and discrimination, and geopolitical dynamics like the conflict in Ukraine have made it more difficult to safeguard human rights.
“We must always stand up for human rights in the face of challenging global circumstances. Many governments are finding it difficult to strike a compromise between respecting human rights and taking short-term measures to address emergencies “She remarked.
The human rights minister of Indonesia has identified three measures to guarantee the efficient domestic application of international human rights norms. She pointed out that the most pressing concerns relating to human rights must be addressed in every nation as a starting step. As part of efforts to address regional human rights concerns, Indonesia is aiming to strengthen the role of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). Anies Baswedan, a spokesman for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, said at the RCHR in Jakarta that human rights serve as a means of preserving human dignity rather than escalating geopolitical rivalry. The 2020–2022 term of Indonesia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council will soon come to an end. She insisted that double standards, reproaches, and humiliation must be avoided.
