Tehran’s decision-makers are wondering if China’s views toward the region have changed in light of joint statements made during President Xi Jinping’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia. China sees a great chance to take root in the Middle East and disrupt American efforts to concentrate its energies on the Indo-Pacific area. The Iranians are aware that they can suffer unintended consequences in their geopolitical game. Nevertheless, despite its disappointment with Xi’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Iran cannot take a tougher stance without jeopardizing its relations with Beijing.
