Killing of Three US Troops: Biden Demands Reprisal
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Drone Attack on a Base:
A drone attack on a Jordanian base killed three U.S. troops on Sunday. President Biden attributes the attack to Iran-backed militants, vowing retaliation. It marks the first instance of U.S. military personnel killed by hostile fire in the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas war. Tensions rise, fuelling concerns of a broader conflict involving Iran.

Hamas Stance:
Hamas warns that U.S. support for Israel could lead to a “regional explosion.” Biden blames Iran-backed groups in Syria and Iraq, pledging to hold them accountable

Fight Terrorism:
President Biden vows to continue the fight against terrorism, promising accountability for the attackers. U.S. Central Command reports 25 wounded in the Syrian border attack, with identities of the deceased withheld. Hamas spokesperson, Sami Abu Zuhri, suggests the soldier deaths send a message to the U.S., linking it to the situation in Gaza. Abu Zuhri warns of a potential regional explosion if the perceived American-Zionist aggression in Gaza persists.

US and Allied Forces:
Pentagon reports over 150 attacks on U.S. and allied forces in Iraq and Syria since mid-October. Retaliatory strikes by Washington followed the attacks in both countries. Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an alliance of Iran-linked groups, claims responsibility for many attacks. Their opposition is rooted in disagreement with U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict.

Latest round of the Israel-Hamas conflict
The Israel-Hamas conflict escalated with a Palestinian attack on October 7, causing about 1,140 deaths, mainly civilians. The U.S. swiftly provided military aid to Israel, leading to a relentless offensive that resulted in at least 26,422 deaths in Gaza, primarily women and children. Widespread anger in the region follows, fuelling violence involving Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

The Lebanon portion:
In Lebanon, the conflict involves near daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel. American forces are directly engaged in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia conducts over two months of attacks on shipping, claiming to target Israeli-linked vessels in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

The United States and Britain have response:
The U.S. and Britain conducted two rounds of joint strikes against the Houthis in response. American forces independently carried out air raids against the rebels. The rebels declared American and British interests as legitimate targets. Growing violence in various Middle East regions sparks fears of a broader conflict involving Iran. Washington is actively trying to avoid the worst-case scenario of a direct regional conflict.
