Russia Claims Peace Talks as Pointless and Harmful
Russia dismissed Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s plan for resolving the two-year war. He labelled peace talks as as “pointless and harmful.” The fourth meeting held in Davos, revealed differences among participants. This resulted in zero support for the proposals.
Zelensiky Formula:
The commentary stated a growing understanding that focusing on the ‘Zelenskiy formula’ wouldn’t lead to sustainable peace. Russia calims all peace talks as pointless and harmful inclyding the one held in Davos.
Russia is excluded from meetings focused on Zelenskiy’s peace plan. Zelenskiy’s plan demands the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine, recognition of 1991 post-Soviet borders, and accountability mechanisms for Moscow.
Sanction Russia
Zelenskiy refuses talks with Russia while its troops are in Ukraine. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he urged the West to escalate sanctions on Moscow and bolster support for Kyiv. Russian President Putin warned on Tuesday that if the war’s pattern persists, Ukraine’s statehood could face an “irreparable blow.” He asserted that Russia would not be compelled to abandon the gains made in its military campaign.
Support from Global South:
Ukraine aims to garner more support from the “global south” through meetings and diplomatic efforts.
According to Zelenskiy’s Chief of Staff, participants from 18 Asian countries, 12 African countries, and six South American countries attended the Davos meeting.
The Swiss government, following the latest gathering on Zelenskiy’s peace plan, agreed to host a global peace summit on Ukraine at Zelenskiy’s request.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the Davos talks as “simply talking for the sake of talking,” emphasizing that no progress towards a settlement could occur without Russia’s participation.
