Israeli Defence Minister Outlines New Phase in Gaza War
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has revealed the next phase of Israel’s military operations in the besieged Gaza Strip and outlined plans for the post-war period. The announcement, made on Thursday, sheds light on the evolving strategies and objectives of the Israeli military.

Military Operations in Northern Gaza
Gallant’s office issued a statement outlining a shift in the combat approach in the northern region of Gaza. This new phase is said to be based on military achievements on the ground, involving a combination of raids, tunnel demolitions, air and ground strikes, and special forces operations. The aim is to maintain pressure and control in the area.

Southern Enclave: Targeting Hamas Leaders
In the densely populated southern part of Gaza, where the majority of the population resides in temporary shelters, the military operation will persist. The focus remains on eliminating Hamas leaders and rescuing Israeli hostages. The statement emphasizes that this operation will continue as long as deemed necessary.

Gaza War Background
The Israeli offensive in Gaza was initiated following an October 7 attack by Hamas gunmen, resulting in casualties and hostages. The conflict has led to significant casualties and displacement, with many residents forced out of their homes and large portions of Gaza reduced to rubble.

Post-War Governance Plans
Looking beyond the conflict, Gallant outlined Israel’s vision for Gaza after the war. It is asserted that Hamas will no longer control Gaza, and Israel will maintain its operational freedom. However, there will be no Israeli civilian presence, and Palestinian entities are expected to be in charge of civilian affairs in the enclave.

The conditions set for this arrangement include a commitment from Palestinian bodies not to engage in hostile actions or threats against Israel. This indicates Israel’s willingness to delegate civilian affairs to Palestinians, provided there is a commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Multinational Task Force and Border Governance
As part of a restructuring plan, Israel intends to establish a multinational task force comprising Western and Arab nations. This force, led by Israel, is envisioned to govern the border area and participate in the redevelopment of the Gaza Strip. The collaboration with Egypt and the US aims to ensure tight supervision of the border.

Hamas’s Stance and Ongoing Operations
Despite the military pressure, Hamas remains steadfast in its control of Gaza, gaining popularity across the occupied Palestinian territories. Ongoing military operations in southern Gaza, coupled with displacement and humanitarian concerns, create a complex and challenging situation on the ground.

Gallant’s announcement provides insights into Israel’s evolving strategy in the Gaza conflict and its vision for post-war governance. The proposed multinational task force and the conditions for Palestinian entities in charge highlight a potential shift in the dynamics of the region. However, the complexities of the situation, including the resilience of Hamas and the humanitarian crisis, pose significant challenges for achieving a stable post-war Gaza.
