António Guterres, secretary-general of the UN, says that every day, we must fight for a future for every child that is more fair and inclusive. He further remarked ” Children & young people around the world are raising their voices on the issues that matter to their generation. They are my greatest hope ”
Every year on November 20, World Children’s Day—originally known as Universal Children’s Day—is observed in an effort to foster global understanding, raise children’s consciousness, and enhance their welfare. The day the UN General Assembly enacted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, November 20 is significant. The UN General Assembly also adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on this day in 1989. Since 1990, the UN General Assembly has celebrated World Children’s Day on the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. World Children’s Day provides every one of us with a motivational starting point to advocate for, promote, and celebrate children’s rights through conversations and other forms of expression.
