Who were the Hamas officials killed in Beirut?

The recent drone strike in Beirut that claimed the lives of senior Hamas officials, including deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri, has sent shockwaves through the region. The attack, shrouded in mystery with no clear responsibility claimed, has heightened tensions in an already volatile situation. In this article, we delve into the profiles of the Hamas officials killed and the potential implications of their deaths.

Saleh al-Arouri:
Saleh al-Arouri, at 57, was not only the deputy chief of the Hamas political bureau but also a founding member of the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas. Having spent 15 years in an Israeli prison, he played a crucial role in negotiations, including the 2011 exchange of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Al-Arouri lived in exile in Lebanon, making him a prominent figure in the Palestinian resistance movement.

Azzam al-Aqra:
Azzam al-Aqra, 54, was a leading commander of the Qassam Brigades, overseeing military operations outside Gaza. Exiled to Lebanon in 1992, he faced accusations of plotting to penetrate Israeli communications networks in 2022. Known as Abu Abdullah, al-Aqra’s role extended beyond military operations, contributing significantly to the group’s activities in Lebanon.

Samir Fendi:
Samir Fendi, also known as Abu Amer, was a senior leader of the Qassam Brigades and the top commander in southern Lebanon. His prominence in the organization made him a target for Israel, as revealed in a July report listing him for potential assassination. Fendi’s role in southern Lebanon signified the strategic importance of the region for Hamas.

Other Victims:
The drone strike also claimed the lives of Mahmoud Zaki Shaheen, Mohammed al-Rayes, Mohammed Bashasha, and Ahmed Hamoud. While their roles may not have been as publicly visible as the higher-ranking officials, their contributions to the organization were significant.

Implications and Possible Motivations:
The attack raises questions about the motivations behind targeting Hamas officials in Lebanon. While Israel has not officially claimed responsibility, speculations abound regarding the involvement of other regional actors. The strike occurred after a period of escalated tensions, with both Israel and Hamas engaging in significant military actions.

Potential Motivations:
a. Disruption of Hamas Operations: The elimination of key military and political figures could disrupt Hamas’s activities in Lebanon, potentially impacting its support for Palestinians in the ongoing conflict.
b. Retaliation for Recent Actions: The strike might be a response to recent events, such as the rocket attacks on Israeli territories or the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, indirectly involving regional actors.

The drone strike in Beirut targeting Hamas officials has broader implications for the region’s geopolitical landscape. As investigations unfold, the international community closely watches the aftermath, evaluating the impact on Hamas, Lebanon, and the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. The incident underscores the complex and interconnected nature of conflicts in the Middle East, where actions in one arena can reverberate across borders.
